SALSA RETAKE THE RAY

The San Antonio Salsa Edge Mexico City AFC in RFFL Bowl XXVIII to Win Second RFFL Championship in Three Years

The San Antonio Salsa returned to the RFFL Bowl on a mission to take back The Ray and that’s exactly what they did with a 116.10 to 110.30 tight victory over Mexico City AFC to win RFFL Bowl XXVIII. Salsa Owner Dr. Todd Leight becomes just the second owner in RFFL history to win four titles.

The Salsa were led by superstar QB Patrick Mahomes, who has experienced plenty of NFL success but none in the RFFL till this game. Mahomes threw for 320 passing yards, ran for 12 yards and threw three passing TDs for 26.00 fantasy points to earn RFFL Bowl XXVIII MVP honors. Mahomes was the 14th QB to win RFFL Bowl MVP and just the first since QB Josh Allen took home that honor four years ago in RFFL Bowl XXIV.

Mahomes gave the Salsa an early lead on Christmas day on Wednesday as Mahomes sliced up the Steelers defense all game.

Mexico City AFC had old man TE Travis Kelce to help balance some of that out, but after the first game the Salsa led 26.00 to 14.40. The Salsa added to their early lead on the night game on Christmas as TE Mark Andrews caught two passes, but one was for a TD and the other was a 67-yard completion to give Andrews 12.80 and build the Salsa’s lead to 38.8 to 14.40.

The tide swung back to Mexico City AFC on Saturday’s couple games as their top RB Kyren Williams scored 13.20 points. WR Courtland Sutton scored 11.50 and WR Ja’Marr Chase (Mexico City AFC’s first round pick) added 10.20. And RB James Conner was a dud with just 0.80 points. Conner left the game in the second quarter when he aggravated a previous knee injury after managing just eight yards total and did not return to the game. In a sick twist of fate, Mexico City AFC Owner Bryan Hermann had RB Michael Carter on the bench, and he ended up playing the bulk of the work once Conner went down and scored 8.10 points.

After Saturday’s slate, Mexico City AFC did lead 50.1 to 38.80 but they had five players in the books while San Antonio only had two so far and the lead wasn’t enough to hold off the horses coming for San Antonio.

RB Jonathan Taylor had one of his best performances of the season as he ran over the Giants for 25.60 fantasy points

On Sunday, the Salsa got an elite performance from RB Jonathan Taylor who scored 25.60 points to come close to Mahomes’ total. Taylor may have played second fiddle to RB Saquon Barkley all season, but it was Taylor that led the way in the biggest moment of the season. That’s not to say Barkley didn’t produce in this one. He capped off his terrific season with a stellar game and 16.90 points. The duo may have been the highest producing 1-2 running back punch in the RFFL history as the two combined for a ridiculous 551.00 fantasy points this season. I don’t know if that’s the record for two backs on the same teams, but I’ll say it’s gotta be at least top three.

The Salsa continued with the Buffalo Bills defense ripping the Jets for 12.00 points and RB Tyjae Spears added 10.30 points. The Salsa also saw production from rookie RB Tyrone Tracy with 7.30 points and the Jets version of WR Davante Adams managed just 4.70 points.

Mexico City AFC gave the Salsa all they could handle on Sunday. Coming in at 10-5 with a division title to boot and a big win in the semifinals last week over Jackson Hole, the hopes were high in Mexico City. WR DeVonta Smith was the top producer for Mexico City with 24.00 points and the Philadelphia Eagles defense added an impressive 20.00 points in their blowout of the Cowboys.

QB Jordan Love added 14.00 points as he’s been scuffling in the second half of the season. It’s hard to put everything on Love, but if he scores just 20 points it would have made the difference. RB Jerome Ford also disappointed with just 2.20 points. Getting only three points flat from two RBs (Ford and Conner) is brutal when you only lose by less than six points.

With San Antonio leading 115.60 to 110.30 headed into Sunday Night Football only WR Terry McLaurin remained for the Salsa, and he only scored 0.50 to complete the scoring at 116.10 to 110.30. The stars led the way for San Antonio while the role players did enough to help bring home the win and stave off Mexico City AFC on Sunday.

With the loss, Hermann drops to 2-3 in RFFL Bowls and will have to wait another season to chase that third title. He has made the postseason four straight years including back-to-back Tomlinson Division titles, so it’s been a very competitive bunch from Hermann as of late.

For Dr. Leight and his Salsa, The Ray returns to San Antonio after a one-year hiatus to Orlando. Dr. Leight wins his 4th RFFL championship tying retired Kurt Presnar for the most titles in RFFL history. Dr. Leight wins his second title in three years and is now 4-2 in the big game. Congrats to Todd and the Salsa on a job well done this season!
